Navigating the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at NC State University
North Carolina State University (NC State) is committed to making education accessible and affordable for students from all backgrounds. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at NC State plays a crucial role in this mission by providing a range of financial assistance options to students and their families. This article explores the various resources and programs offered by the office, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study opportunities.
Applying for Financial Aid: The FAFSA
The first step in seeking financial aid at NC State is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form, available online at www.studentaid.gov, assesses a family's ability to contribute to educational expenses. By submitting the FAFSA, students are considered for all federal financial aid programs, as well as most state and institutional aid opportunities. It's important to note that students must reapply for aid each year by completing the FAFSA.
Types of Financial Aid Available
NC State offers a diverse array of financial aid options to help students fund their education:
- Scholarships: These are awarded based on academic merit, talent, or specific characteristics. Some scholarships also consider financial need.
- Grants: These are typically need-based and do not require repayment.
- Loans: These provide funds that must be repaid with interest.
- Work-Study: This program allows students to earn money through part-time jobs, often on campus, while pursuing their studies.
Aid is available on a non-discriminatory basis to all qualifying students based on the applicant’s financial need.
NC State Scholarships
NC State provides various scholarships for both incoming and continuing students. Many scholarships emphasize academic excellence or the demonstration of unique talents or characteristics. Some scholarships also require students to demonstrate financial need.

University-Wide Scholarships
Once admitted to NC State, students can apply for scholarship consideration through PACK ASSIST, the university's scholarship application portal. This portal allows students to access and apply for a wide range of university-wide scholarships.
College and Departmental Scholarships
In addition to university-wide scholarships, many colleges and departments within NC State offer scholarships specifically for students enrolled in their academic programs. These scholarships are often funded by alumni, friends of the university, foundations, and industry partners. Both incoming freshmen and continuing students are eligible for these scholarships.
Private Scholarships
NC State encourages students to explore private scholarship opportunities offered by external organizations. These scholarships may be based on factors such as place of residence, background, professional affiliations, or field of study.
Featured Scholarship Programs
NC State boasts several prestigious scholarship programs designed to support exceptional students:
Park Scholarships
Established in 1996, the Park Scholarships program attracts outstanding students to NC State based on their accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Approximately 40 scholarships are awarded each year to entering freshmen across all disciplines. The Park Scholarship covers the cost of attendance for four years and includes enrichment grants for study abroad, research, service, and conferences, as well as individualized faculty mentoring. The Park Scholarships are named in honor of Roy H. Park ’31, an NC State alumnus and creator of the Park Foundation.

The scholarship is targeted towards low- and middle-income families from North Carolina and is limited to students studying in STEM disciplines or affiliated education majors. The scholarship provides $23,000 annually and is renewable for up to four years for first-year students and two years for transfer students. Dr. Jim Goodnight is the founder and CEO of SAS Institute, and Ann Goodnight serves as the director of community relations at SAS and is a former member of the NC State Board of Trustees.
The Caldwell Fellows Program
The Caldwell Fellows is a leadership development program that has shaped over 1300 alumni through servant leadership. Supported by endowments held by the NC State Alumni Association, alumni invest in individual Fellows, providing funds for experiential learning. Students engage in community-based service-learning, wilderness adventure, international engagement, and capstone training at the Center for Creative Leadership. Students receive a three-year stipend, contingent upon maintaining program ideals and a 3.25 GPA. The application period begins in January, and only first-year students are eligible to apply.
