History and Development
The establishment of SFCC was a significant milestone for the Santa Fe community. In early 1983, the New Mexico State Legislature approved a $1.5 million bill to fund the creation of a community college in Santa Fe. Construction of the permanent facility commenced in 1984, supported by a $5 million bond and private donations. Over the years, SFCC has expanded its facilities to meet the evolving needs of its students. A fitness building was added in 1993, followed by a technology and occupation lab in 1995, an early childhood development center in 1996, and a fine arts center in 1999. The college continued to invest in its infrastructure, adding an instructional technology center in 2001 and launching a sustainability program in 2005. In July 2019, Dr. Becky Rowley became the ninth president of the college.

In 2009, Santa Fe Community College proposed establishing a Higher Education Center (HEC) to address the need for more accessible higher education opportunities in the region. A survey revealed that a majority of local residents would pursue a higher degree if it were located in the city.
Through the HEC, Santa Fe residents can earn bachelor's or master's degrees from the University of New Mexico, NM Highlands University, and the Institute of American Indian Art by attending online and instructional TV classes at Santa Fe Community College. These institutions have coordinated their resources and allow students to complete basic coursework through SFCC before pursuing higher degrees through the HEC.
