New York University (NYU) recognizes the crucial link between student wellbeing and academic success. To support its students, NYU provides a comprehensive range of health services, ensuring access to medical and mental health care. This article delves into the various resources available through NYU Student Health Services (SHS), outlining the scope of services, accessibility, and commitment to student wellbeing.
Prioritizing Student Wellbeing at NYU Grossman School of Medicine
At NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Student Health Service, the understanding that your wellbeing is an essential part of your educational success is paramount. Care is provided by appointment, and all services, except certain immunizations, are provided free of charge. Students who seek care can rest assured that they are in a safe environment. Staff clinicians are not involved in teaching or in evaluating a student’s academic or clinical performance.
For Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences students, Student Health Service provides urgent care services and sexually transmitted infection screening. Information for current students is updated weekly and available on the Brightspace page. Clinic and doctors’ hours are subject to change, so please call ahead to plan your visit. All visits require appointments. Nurse practitioners are available Monday through Thursday, 8:00AM to 5:30PM, and Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. The Doctor’s clinic hours vary by week and are available on the Brightspace page. All visits require appointments; see schedule on Brightspace for information regarding making an appointment.
Current NYU Grossman School of Medicine MD students can utilize free 24/7 virtual medical and counseling resources through UnitedHealthcare Student Resources. For crisis intervention and suicide prevention, call Trevor Lifeline at 1-866-488-7386. Students who use these resources are encouraged to follow up with Student Health Services the next business day.
The SHS is located at 334 East 25th Street, suite 103. The turnaround time for records requests is 5 to 10 business days. In accordance with New York State Law, records are maintained for 7 years.

Primary Medical Care at the Student Health Center
For primary medical care, the Student Health Center (SHC) has a team of board-certified physicians and nurses. The simple scheduling process makes it easy to stay on top of preventive care, such as eye exams and annual physicals. You can also get the annual flu shot and other vaccinations, including ones needed for travel. Beyond preventive care, you can seek diagnosis and treatment from a range of on-site specialists. In-house specialty services include sports medicine, dermatology, and gastroenterology. What’s more, the on-site pharmacy can fill prescriptions, including those from outside medical providers.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
The Student Health Center is committed to providing respectful care to every student. Therefore, its services are accessible to trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming students. They also partner with the Moses Center for Student Accessibility to ensure students with disabilities have access to accommodations and support. And when it comes to reproductive and sexual health needs, the SHC provides confidential information, examinations, and treatments.
Mental Health and Counseling Services
Mental health is just as important as physical health, and you can visit the SHC for counseling and wellness services if you’re dealing with stress or any mental health concerns. If you need to talk to someone right away, you can access the Wellness Exchange, a 24/7 hotline, from anywhere in the world. There, you’ll connect with a certified counselor on the phone-or via chat if you’re using the secure Wellness Exchange app. And no problem is too big or too small.
A Top University Health Center
Thanks to these high-quality services, the SHC is among the top university health centers in the country. Although some services have been suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most are still offered virtually, with in-person follow-up appointments available as needed.
