Navigating Chicago Transit: A Comprehensive Guide to Student Ventra Card Requirements
Ventra is the convenient fare payment system for CTA, Pace and Metra that allows customers to pay for train and bus rides throughout Chicagoland. For students navigating the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Pace Suburban Bus Service, and Metra, the Ventra card is an essential tool. This article provides a comprehensive guide to student Ventra card requirements, addressing frequently asked questions and outlining the various options available to primary, secondary, and college students.
Understanding the Ventra Card
The Ventra Card is a reusable, contactless, hard plastic card capable of storing transit value. It offers a convenient way to pay for rides on CTA, Pace, and Metra. The Ventra Customer Service Center is located at 567 W.
How Much Does a Ventra Card Cost?
There is a $5 purchase fee for the Ventra Card, which is returned to you as transit value upon registration within 90 days of purchase.
Using Your Ventra Card
Using your Ventra Card is simple: Remove the Ventra Card, ticket or contactless bankcard that you want to use to pay for rides and tap it on the center of the card reader.
Adding Value and Passes
Adding passes and transit value at a Ventra Vending Machine is easy. You can buy all types of passes, including 7-Day or 30-Day passes, or load value onto your Transit Account and quickly check your balance with a tap of your card.

Ventra for Different Student Groups
Eligibility for reduced fares and specific card types varies depending on the student's age, school, and enrollment status. Here's a breakdown for different student groups:
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Students
Chicago Public Schools will issue Ventra Student Cards to students directly. The Student Ventra Card for CPS students may be purchased only through your child’s school. The card is valid for use on the CTA for five years, which means you will no longer have to buy a new card every school year. Students can still use their Student Ventra Card when school isn't in session -- regular fares are automatically deducted from transit value outside of a school term. For students age 7-11, a CTA Reduced Fare applies if the card is registered as "Reduced" or with the aid of customer service. To use Ventra, students will no longer need to carry a separate permit. The CTA strongly encourages parents to register the Student Ventra Card to protect their balance in the event the card is lost or stolen, and to have access to online account management. Registration is quick and easy and can be done over the phone or online at ventrachicago.com.
The Ventra CPS Fare Card costs $3.00 and may be purchased only through your child’s school. Please allow 7 to 10 days to process orders for a Ventra CPS Fare Card. We strongly encourage parents to register their child’s Ventra CPS Fare Card to protect their balance in the event the Card is lost or stolen and to have access to online account management.
Non-CPS Primary and Secondary School Students
Students who attend non-CPS schools are eligible for the Ventra Student Card program. If your school issues Student Ventra Cards directly, see your school's administrator for information on how to get a new Card or ask them to re-enable the student reduced fare rate on your existing Card when your new school term begins. Students 11 years old or younger who have a registered student Ventra Card with a student entitlement are eligible to receive a reduced fare outside of school hours. To get the entitlement, a parent or guardian must bring their child’s student Ventra Card with a birth certificate to the Ventra Customer Service Center, 567 West Lake Street, 2nd floor.

College and University Students
College and university students have access to the U-Pass program, offering unlimited rides on the CTA for each college semester. The Ventra U-Pass provides unlimited rides on the CTA for each college semester. Students will use the same U-Pass throughout their college career. If your card is lost or stolen, visit your school’s U-Pass administrator to complete a report and request a new card. Your school does not automatically register your U-Pass with Ventra. Your U-Pass will function as a regular Ventra Card during breaks or at the end of the school term. Please note: Your Ventra Transit Account must be in good standing prior to your full-time school session resuming for your U-Pass to return to an unlimited riding pass. Please note: You will only receive unlimited rides with U-Pass on CTA trains and buses when your school is in session.
City Colleges of Chicago is offering a discounted Ventra U-Pass for students enrolled in six (6) or more credit hours for college credit during the Spring 2025 semester. Any student taking six or more credit hours can opt in for a one-time, nonrefundable fee of $70 for the Spring semester. Students who would like to opt in to receive a U-Pass should log in to their student portal at my.ccc.edu and fill out the U-Pass form under "Announcements." Then, they can choose how they would like to pay the $70 fee. Students may pay with cash or credit card, use available financial aid, or request financial assistance. If you already have a Ventra U-Pass card and you meet the criteria below, the U-Pass function on your card will automatically activate the day after you pay the fee. If you are a new student to the Ventra U-Pass program for Spring 2025, you must opt in at my.ccc.edu. Your U-Pass Card is valid for at least five years, and your transit account will remain active when the semester is completed.
Reduced Fare Programs and Eligibility
Eligible CTA and Pace customers, including students, seniors and people with disabilities, can receive a reduced fare. The Student Reduced Fare is separate from the regular Reduced Fare and is valid on school days only between 5:30am and 8:30pm. Student Ventra Cards are required to get the Student Reduced Fare on CTA. Note: College students do not qualify for the Student Reduced Fare. If you have a disability, you may also qualify for this program.

CTA offers a Student Reduced Fare on its bus and train services for elementary and high school students ages 7-20 valid Monday through Friday from 5:30 AM through 8:30 PM. Students need to use a Student Ventra Card when boarding to get this special fare.

Pace Reduced Fare Options
Pace offers a reduced rate to high school and younger students. Once students have their Card, they have several options. Daily riders may want to buy a Pace 30-Day Reduced Fare Pass. This pass costs $30 and is loaded to your VentraStudent Card. It offers unlimited rides on Pace regular routes and Pace On Demand services, without school-hour restrictions. To load this reduced fare pass to a Ventra account, a student will need to obtain a Ventra Card with the student entitlement (see below for details on how to do that). Less frequent riders can still get a discount on Pace rides by using their Ventra Student Cards and loading value to the transit account to pay per ride.
A surcharge of $1.10, which must be paid for using Ventra transit value, will apply when using the 30-Day Reduced Fare Pass on Pace Premium routes. and only for travel to and from school. The bus operator may ask for a student ID to confirm eligibility for the reduced fare. However, the 30-Day Reduced Fare Pass offers students this great value all day, every day, regardless of trip purpose. A surcharge of $1.10, which must be paid for using Ventra transit value, will apply when using the 30-Day Reduced Fare Pass on Pace Premium routes.
Contactless Payment Options
Ventra also accepts industry-standard, contactless payments, which means that you can use a bankcard loaded into digital wallets or payment apps such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay and Ventra when boarding a bus or when entering a CTA train station. When using a digital wallet to pay, you’ll be charged a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) fare when you board. Transfers are now available between services when using contactless PAYG and are charged at the same rate as when using a Ventra Card.
Using Digital Wallets
Yes! Ventra is designed to accept a digital Ventra Card on your Android smartphone, iPhone or Apple Watch. The Ventra Card on Google Pay, iPhone and Apple Watch brings all the features of Ventra Cards straight to your phone or watch.

Contactless Bankcards
When using a contactless bankcard or mobile wallet to pay, you’ll be charged a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) fare when you board. Transfers are now available between services when using contactless PAYG and are charged at the same rate as when using a Ventra Card. A full pay-as-you-go fare will be deducted for each ride ($2.50 for CTA trains, $2.25 for CTA buses, transfers are charged at the same rate as when using a Ventra Card; $2 non-premium Pace buses). Note that your credit or debit card may be authorized for $5 when you first touch it to a fare reader, even though the actual fare is less.
Managing Multiple Cards and Avoiding Issues
To ensure transit fare is deducted from your preferred payment card and avoid “card clash,” please take out the card from your wallet and tap it on the card reader. Ventra is a contactless payment system and will accept payment from either the Ventra Card or a contactless credit or debit card. Since it doesn’t know which of your cards you wish to use, it will deduct your transit fare from the first card that it reads.
Why Don’t All Charges on My Bank Account Reflect the Number of Rides I’ve Taken on a Given Day?
Ventra will often combine and process charges at the end of a business day, in batches. For example, if you take two rides for $2.50 each, you may see a single transaction on your bank account for $5. These charges may not correspond with the exact date you took the ride.

To get the most out of the Ventra app and to ensure you’re able to access future functionality, it’s important your device’s operating system is up to date.
