Understanding UMSL Tuition and Fees: A Comprehensive Breakdown

Choosing a university is a significant financial decision. Understanding the costs associated with attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) is crucial for students and their families to plan effectively. This article breaks down UMSL's tuition, fees, and other expenses to provide a clear picture of the overall cost of attendance.

Sticker Price: Tuition and Fees

The "sticker price" represents the advertised cost of attending UMSL. For the academic year, tuition is $15,120 for in-state students and $37,590 for out-of-state students. This figure includes both tuition and fees, which support various campus services such as library access, gym facilities, student centers, technology resources, and health centers.

Compared to the national average for in-state tuition ($12,422), UMSL's in-state tuition is more expensive. Similarly, its out-of-state tuition is higher than the national average ($29,767).

Total Cost of Attendance

While the sticker price provides a base figure, the total cost of attendance encompasses all expenses related to attending UMSL. This includes tuition and fees, as well as the cost of food and housing, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses.

At UMSL, the estimated total cost is $29,902 for in-state students and $51,322 for out-of-state students. These figures provide a more realistic estimate of the financial commitment required to attend the university.

Simplified Tuition Structure

Effective Fall 2023, UMSL introduced a Simplified Tuition structure designed to make college expenses more predictable and transparent. This new structure consolidates base tuition with course and supplemental fees into a flat credit hour rate based on a student's major. This removes the uncertainty of assessed tuition and fees based on the type of course enrolled.

Students pay the tier rate for their degree plan as of the last day to register for a regular session class. If a student changes majors after that day, the billing tier will not update until the next semester. The academic calendar provides specific dates.

Direct vs. Indirect Costs

Understanding the difference between direct and indirect costs is essential for budgeting purposes.

  • Direct Costs: These costs are charged directly to the student's university account. They include tuition, housing and food (if living on campus), and any books, course materials, supplies, or equipment charged through the campus bookstore.
  • Indirect Costs: These are expenses not charged through the university but are included in a student's educational expenses. Examples include off-campus food and housing, transportation, and personal expenses.

Tuition is always a direct cost, billed to the student each semester. Food and housing may be direct or indirect, depending on whether the student lives on campus. On-campus housing allowances are based on a double-room, 4-person unit in University Housing. Off-campus allowances are based on regional averages. The "Living with parent" budget only includes the food allowance. Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment are indirect costs unless purchased at the University Bookstore. Miscellaneous/personal and transportation expenses are also indirect costs.

Financial Aid Options

UMSL offers various financial aid options to help students manage the cost of attendance. These include grants, scholarships, and student loans.

  • Grants: These are typically based on financial need and do not need to be repaid. They can be awarded by the federal government, the state, or the college itself. 18% of undergraduates receive Pell grants.
  • Merit Scholarships: These are awarded based on academic achievements or other talents. They do not need to be repaid, but students may need to reapply each year.
  • Student Loans: These are sums of money given to students to help them pay for college. This money must be repaid later with interest. 31% of full-time first-time undergraduates are awarded federal student loans.

Loan fees are estimated and deducted from the loan before it is credited to the student's account.

Advanced Credit Program (ACP)

The Advanced Credit Program (ACP) allows eligible high school students to take college courses for credit. The ACP fee is about one-fifth of the cost of regular on-campus undergraduate courses. No payment is due at the time of registration. Billing statements will state the minimum balance owed and due date.

Online Cohort MBA Program

The Online Cohort MBA program has an all-inclusive cost, regardless of residency. The program cost per credit hour is $1,103. If prerequisite "boot camps" are required, the Ed G. Smith College of Business offers boot camp options for $750 per course. For the Online Cohort MBA, students may need up to two boot camp courses.

Non-Degree Programs: OIPE Succeed, Succeed+, and Link Certificate Programs

For undergraduate non-degree seekers such as those enrolled in the OIPE Succeed, Succeed+, and Link Certificate programs, the standard fee at the University of Missouri-St. Louis applies. The Succeed Program received approval from the United States Department of Education as a Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary Program (CTP). As a CTP program, students who qualify may receive federal financial aid in the form of the Federal Pell Grant and the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. UMSL currently has four internal scholarships available for non-degree students enrolled in OIPE programs. There are also Non-UMSL Scholarships that students can apply for.

Important Payment Information

Students who do not pay the minimum amount by the due date will be assessed late fees. Students who do not pay the full tuition amount by the final payment deadline risk having their entire semester of credit canceled. For ACP students, semesters dropped for non-payment can be reinstated upon receipt of the full tuition amount. Students must reinstate the entire semester to receive credit.
