Navigating UTRGV Student Health Services: A Comprehensive Guide

UTRGV (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) students have access to on-campus health services, but many are not fully aware of the resources available to them. UT Health RGV Student Health operates clinics on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses, providing accessible and discreet medical care. This article aims to provide a detailed overview of these services, including their costs, locations, and available procedures, empowering students to utilize these resources effectively.

Funding and Accessibility

As a UTRGV student, a mandatory medical service fee is included in your fees each semester. This fee is $30 during the Spring semester and $15 per summer term. These fees contribute to the operation of the student health clinics, making healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Visits to the clinic are discreet, and students do not need to schedule an appointment for most services. This walk-in accessibility allows students to seek medical attention promptly without the hassle of pre-arranged appointments.

Payment Options

A significant benefit of UTRGV Student Health is the flexible payment system. According to Amaro Salinas Jr., UTRGV Student Health assistant director, any charges incurred at the clinic will be applied to the student's ASSIST account. Students are not required to pay immediately and can defer payment until they receive financial aid, loans, or other forms of financial assistance.

“Any charges will go to their student account, so they don’t have to pay here,” Salinas said. “They do not have to pay it right away. They could wait till they get either financial aid or they’re waiting on a loan, or they are waiting on anything.

This system alleviates immediate financial pressure, ensuring that students can prioritize their health without worrying about immediate out-of-pocket expenses.

Available Services and Associated Costs

UT Health RGV Student Health offers a range of medical services to address the healthcare needs of students. These services include general check-ups, treatment for common illnesses, and preventative care.

Gray mentioned, “There are some things we have to charge for,” indicating that while many services are covered by the mandatory fee, some procedures and items incur additional costs.

The clinic operates a small pharmacy, and students are responsible for the cost of any medications prescribed. However, the clinic only charges the actual cost of acquiring the medications, ensuring affordability. Similarly, students are billed for the cost of any lab work performed.

“We have a small pharmacy, so any medications that are ordered … students would have to pay for them. … We only charge what it costs us to get them. … The same with lab work."

Clinic Locations and Contact Information

The on-campus clinics are conveniently located in Cortez Hall on the Texas Southmost College campus and at 613 N. Closner Blvd. in Edinburg. Both clinics operate Monday through Friday, providing accessible healthcare during regular business hours.

Walk-in checkups are available for general medical concerns. However, students requiring elective procedures must schedule an appointment in advance. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 665-2511 for the Edinburg location and 882-3896 for the Brownsville location.

Outreach and Engagement

UT Health RGV Student Health actively engages in outreach programs to promote awareness of its services and encourage students to prioritize their health. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinics observed a decline in patient visits, prompting increased outreach efforts.

Salinas said following the peak of the COVID 19 COVID-19 pandemic, the clinics noticed a drop in patient visits, which is why outreach is a priority.

These outreach initiatives include health education campaigns, wellness events, and collaborations with other university departments. For example, "Next month we’re doing goat yoga for select students on both campuses." These activities aim to create a healthier campus environment and encourage students to utilize the available health services.
