Volusia County Summer Camp Scholarships: Providing Opportunities for Children

Summer break presents a challenge for many parents: how to keep their children engaged, supervised, and learning while school is out. Summer camps offer a solution, providing enriching experiences and fostering personal growth. However, the cost can be a significant barrier for some families. To address this, Volusia County offers summer camp scholarships to income-eligible households, ensuring more children have access to these valuable opportunities.

The Need for Summer Camp Scholarships

The cost of summer camp can be substantial. Data from Child Care Aware indicated that the average cost of summer camp in Florida was approximately $2,544. Nearby states also report high costs, with Georgia averaging around $2,022 and Alabama at $1,842. These expenses can create financial strain for families, making summer camp an unattainable option. Volusia County's scholarship program aims to alleviate this burden.

Volusia County's Scholarship Program: Details and Eligibility

Volusia County provides scholarships to children ages 5-14 from income-eligible households residing in the county. Children up to age 17 attending approved special needs camps may also be eligible. The program is designed to support families at or below 200 percent of the poverty level.

Scholarships are awarded per child, based on eligibility and funding availability. The standard scholarship covers $80 per week or the full amount of attendance for the chosen camp if it is lower than $80. If a summer camp's weekly rate exceeds $80, the parent is responsible for paying the difference.
